Physical Conditions
The continent of Wicacea is completely wooded with little light reaching the forest floor. Located in the North East of the continents, the terrain is uneven and rocky. Approximately a third of the land is un-inhabitable at any one time as the frost tide migrates across the land, freezing over the forest, forcing it into a deep hibernation.
Most of Wicacea enjoys a perpetual state of autumnal stasis, but the transition from a cool dry breeze to a cold snap immediately with the arrival of the Frost Tide. The Dryads of the forest slip into a slumber as The Frost tide approaches, often lulling the Vilarri into a false sense of security enticing them to stay and ultimately freeze to death.
Sapient Species
Vilarri [ vul-ah-ree]
The Vilarri are a humanoid species of nomadic occultists that worship the phases of the moon and draw unmeasured (but limited) energy from its light. The Vilarri are semi nomadic who travel when the frost starts encroaching and then settle for approximately three months. In the early centuries the first Vilarri established roads and base camps to manage the harsh conditions of the frost tide, that are still in use today.
As there is no death by old age, Vilarri who wish to exit life request a ritual and then stay behind to meet the Frost Tide, subsequently blown to dust in the arctic gales. The Vilarri hold a romantic notion of the idea of staying still, or nesting. They feel quietness and solitude is a luxury not experienced by their kind.
NeeOln [ ni-or-ln ]
Wood nymphs of Wicacea, the NeeOln have existed since the beginning of time. During the time of the Ancients the NeeOln were in hibernation and it wasn’t until the snow thawed in the ice Kingdom did they first gain sentience. The NeeOln live within the trees of the forest, moving from wood to wood in order to travel the continent. They have a peaceful existence with the land and are not impacted by the frost tides of Wicacea and enter a hibernation until the ice thaws. They are bestowed ownership of all nature on the continent, and through mutual respect, the NeeOln live in harmony with the Vilarri
The Vilarri live in balance with the NeeOln, who provide them with information on the shifting Frost Tides. The Vilarri in turn bring offerings to the NeeOln whenever they pass and enter the base villages. There is a ritual they perform in order to give thanks to the shelter provided by the NeeOln and the safe keeping of their sacred spaces during the frost tide.
The Head of State
Auilixia was found by the Vilarri on a night of most desperation. Her appearance rejuvenated the energy of the people in both entry and youth and it was for this reason she was nominated as the leader of the Vilarri.
With her nomination as the Lunar High Priestess, Auilixia opened communications with the NeeOln to begin working on understanding the Frost Tide, its movements and potential origins of the curse.
Some knowledge she holds could be shared for a price, but only once a traveler gains her trust - especially if there was something in it for her.
