The Goblin Ball features immersive storytelling where you create and play a character in the World of The Goblin Ball. While this is optional, creating a character can be a fun and rewarding experience but can also be intimidating for beginners. Here are some tips for creating a Goblin Ball character that suits your style and preferences.
- Choose Your Genre. The Goblin Ball exists in a fantasy world where anything is possible, and nothing is what it seems. The Goblin Ball has many different genres and settings, such as fantasy, horror, historical, etc. Each one has its own rules, aesthetics, themes, and challenges. Choose a genre and background that appeals to you and matches your expectations of how you would like your story to play out.
- Understand The World. Once you have chosen your genre and setting (for example, The Witches' Masquerade), you should familiarize yourself with the history and lore of the Goblin Ball. Background information defines the realms' history, culture, politics, geography, etc. History governs how the evening plays out.
- Your Purpose. The next step is to decide what role you want to play on the night. You should pick a character that suits your personality and interests. For example, magical characters may bring spells to trade; rogues are good at stealth and deception and could bring secrets or lies; Rulers come with their political interests; clerics are good at breaking curses, etc. Choose how you would like to interact with the story, and feel free to pivot your goal on the night as the story unfolds.
- Write your backstory. The backstory is the story of your character's life before arriving at The Goblin Ball. It explains who you are, where you come from, and what you have done or experienced. Your backstory can be as straightforward or as complex as you want, but it could be consistent with the rules and lore of The Goblin Ball or create your own. Your backstory can help you define your character's goals, motivations, conflicts, relationships, and personality traits. Our characters would love to learn about your travels.
- Design your costume and props. Bring your character to life by dressing up as them and equipping them with appropriate items such as spells, armour, jewellery, etc. Your costume and props should reflect your character, skills, culture, and style. Outfits should likewise be comfortable and safe to wear, so review the venue before attending. You can make your costume and props or buy them online or from local vendors.
- Trinket Trading. Along with your costume, we recommend (but don't require) you familiarise yourself with Trinket Trading. Trinket Trading is a bonus add-on that lets you trade small gifts with your favourite characters and other guests and ensure you leave with many treasures. While you can obtain treasures from completing quests, trading trinkets will allow you to finish the night with many stories as the moon sets.
Above all your experience will be fun and exciting. How you want to interract is up to you so if you decide to throw caution to the wind, there will always be characters to engage with. If you just want a boogie on the dance floor - you will leave with memorable experiences and treasures to remind you nothing is as it seems, and anything is possible.
